The movement for a National No-Tobacco Day , started in the year 2007, is being led by Students' Movement Against Tobacco and Smoking (SMATS) which started its anti-smoking activity in the Aligarh Muslim University campus and around in 1998. Over a period of time SMATS has done extensive activity and research on tobacco-control in the setting of educational institutions. Projects undertaken by SMATS have been appreciated at different fora. Among the pioneering works of SMATS are Poetry to Combat Tobacco and Model for Tobacco Control in Educational Institutions in India.
